Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men’s soccer team upped its 2014 East Coast Conference record to 2-1-0 and evened its season mark at 3-3-0 with an impressive 3-0 road win over the host Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. Mercy is now 1-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action. Saturday’s three goals are a single-match high so far this year for the Purple Knights.
Freshman Simon Haakansson (Stockholm, Sweden) opened the scoring on Saturday afternoon with a beautiful unassisted finish at the 28:05 mark of play slicing through the Mercy defense to put home his second goal of 2014.
The match remained a 1-0 lead for the Purple Knights into the second half, when freshman Femi Coker (Johannesburg, South Africa) netted his first goal in a UB uniform off an assist from sophomore Luka Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) at the 59:02 mark of play to increase the Bridgeport lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Najja Forbes (Couva, Trinidad & Tobago) completed the scoring on the day with his second goal of 2014 at the 68:13 mark of action, as he banged home a tally off a loose ball following a corner kick.
UB goalkeeper Agustin Prados (Sr., Madrid, Spain) made three saves to record his third shutout of the season.
The Bridgeport men’s soccer team will look run its winning streak to three matches, as the Purple Knights host Queens (N.Y.) College this Wednesday afternoon, October 1, in ECC action at 3:00 p.m.
