Men's Soccer Nipped By Dowling, 1-0, In Heartbreaking ECC Championship Semifinal
Game-Winning Goal Comes With Only 2:32 Reaming In Second Half
Bridgeport, Conn.-Dowling's Ryan Murphy scored his first goal of the season with only 2:32 to play in the second half to lift the third-seeded Golden Lions to a 1-0 win over the number two seed and host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the semifinals of 2013 East Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. Dowling (11-3-3) will travel to top-seeded LIU Post on Friday afternoon to decide the 2013 ECC men's soccer title. Bridgeport closes out its 2013 season with a 9-7-0 overall record.
With Bridgeport dominating the flow of play throughout the second half, the Golden Lions capitalized on a UB turnover in midfield and quickly counterattacked as the ball was sent to Chris Posillico who slipped the ball to Murphy for the game-winning tally on Dowling's only shot on goal in the final 45 minutes.
The Purple Knights outshot DC, 12-6, on the night, but Dowling goalkeeper Chris Friedl stood tall making six saves to record the shutout. Bridgeport's Agustin Prados (Jr., Madrid, Spain) made one stop for the Purple Knights.
