Purple Knights Grab Number Two Seed In 2013 ECC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament With 3-0 Home Win Over UDC
Danny Ruiz Nets Two Goals And Adds One Assist In Saturday's Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team grabbed the number two seed in next week's 2013 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament with a decisive 3-0 home win over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds on Saturday afternoon plus Senior Day in the Park City. UB closes out it regular season with a 9-6-0 overall mark and a 7-3-0 ECC record. UDC finishes its 2013 campaign at 7-6-3 overall and 2-5-3 in conference play.
Celebrating Senior Day, Danny Ruiz (Stamford, Conn.) scored his first two goals of the season in the first half at the 30:42 and 39:33 marks off assists from junior Lee Martins (Bridgeport, Conn.) to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead at the break.
Ruiz would add another point to his scoring ledger on Saturday when he assisted on sophomore Daniel Augenstein's (Sandnes, Norway) second goal of 2013 at the 56:18 mark in the second half from a free kick.
Junior Agustin Prados (Madrid, Spain) with two saves and senior Lee Fenner (Altamont, N.Y.) with five saves shared the shut out in goal for Bridgeport. As a team, UB has notched seven clean sheets in 2013.
Bridgeport outshot UDC, 25-14, on the day, and Firebirds' goalkeeper Louis Connor was outstanding making 12 saves to give his team a chance on the afternoon.
Next up for the UB men's soccer team will be a 2013 ECC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament Semifinal meeting with Dowling College at Knights Field at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6. Dowling topped Bridgeport, 1-0, in the team's only meeting during the 2013 regular season on September 21. That match was also played at UB. Wednesday's winner will moved onto Friday's 2013 East Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship Final.
