Purple Knights Hold Off Queens, 2-1, For Key ECC Men's Soccer Win
The Lees, Middleton And Martins, Score Goals For The Winners
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team got first half goals from senior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) and junior Lee Martins (Bridgeport, Conn.) to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead, and then the Purple Knights held off a furious rally by the host Queens (N.Y.) Knights to record a key 2-1 East Coast Conference road win on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, UB is now 8-6-0 overall and 6-3-0 in conference play. QC is now 9-4-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the ECC.
Middleton scored the first goal of the day, his second of the season, when he headed in a long throw-in from classmate Clayton Ulmer (New Haven, Conn.) at the 7:04 mark.
Martins found the back of the net for a team-leading fifth time in 2013 when he scored off a feed from senior Christoffer Olesen (Kristiansand, Norway) at the 28:36 mark.
The game would stay 2-0 in favor of Bridgeport until Queens cut the deficit in half with a penalty kick tally at the 68:10 mark, but the Knights would not score again, as UB held on for the 2-1 win.
Senior Lee Fenner (Altamont, N.Y.) picked up the victory in net for the Purple Knights making three saves. QC outshot Bridgeport, 10-5, on the afternoon.
Next up for the UB men's soccer team is their 2013 regular season finale at home this Saturday versus the University of the District of Columbia. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Knights Field, and Saturday will also be Senior Day.
