Men's Soccer Tops Daemen, 1-0, In Double Overtime As Lee Martins Nets Golden Goal
UB Heads Into Next Saturday's Home Showdown With NYIT At 7-5-0 Overall And 5-2-0 In Conference Action
Amherst, N.Y.-Junior Lee Martins (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored the only goal of the match 3:38 into the second overtime to lift the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team to a big 1-0 East Coast Conference road win over the host Daemen College Wildcats on a chilly Sunday afternoon in Upstate New York. Sunday's goal is Martins' fourth score of 2013, and his third game-winning tally of the year. UB dominated the match outshooting the Wildcats, 23-7, on the day and holding a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Purple Knights could not hit the back of the net until Martins sent a beautiful long high shot to the right corner of Daemen goal from the left side of the field. With Sunday's win, Bridgeport is now 7-5-0 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play. The Purple Knights have also now won three matches in a row and have found the win column in seven of their last eight contests. UB is now a perfect 3-0-0 in matches that have required overtime this season. The Wildcats are now 4-11-0 overall and remain winless in the ECC at 0-7-0.
Senior goalkeeper Lee Fenner (Altamont, N.Y.), making his first start of the season, notched the shutout for Purple Knights making two saves. As a team, Bridgeport has recorded six clean sheets so far in 2013.
The UB men's soccer team returns to action next Saturday, October 26 when the Purple Knights host NYIT in a key East Coast Conference clash. Action is slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m. Next Saturday is also UB Soccer Alumni Day.
