Andreas Blanke Scored Game-Winning Goal In Men's Soccer's Key 2-1 ECC Home Win Over Roberts Wesleyan
UB Tied For First Place In Conference Standings With 6-1-0 ECC Mark
Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Andreas Blanke (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 1:50 into the second half, as the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team snaoped a two-game losing streak and picked up a key 2-1 East Coast Conference home win over the Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks on Sunday afternoon. Blanke's goal, his team-high fifth of 2012, came from a pretty feed off the foot of sophomore Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). With the win, Bridgeport is now 8-6-0 overall and tied for first place in the East Coast Conference standings with LIU Post at 6-1-0. With the loss, Roberts Wesleyan is now 6-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the ECC.
RWC got the on the board first in Sunday's match when Michael Cunningham hammered home a free kick from just outside the box at the 20:40 mark of play.
The Purple Knights would tie things up a 1-1 when junior Christoffer Olesen (Kristiansand, Norway) headed home a beautiful service off a corner kick from freshman Luis Fajardo (Danbury, Conn.) at 31:17 of the first half setting up Blanke's game winner early in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Augustin Prados (Madrid, Spain) was strong in the Bridgeport net making four saves for the winners. Redhawks' keeper Michael Scavone also played an excellent match recording nine saves to keep his team in the game. UB outshot Roberts Wesleyan, 21-11, on the day.
The UB men's soccer team is back in action on the road at Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (October 16) night for a non-conference game that gets underway in New Haven at 7:00 p.m.
