Bridgeport Men's Soccer Defeats UDC, 2-1, In Double Overtime
Senior Lee Middleton Heads Home Game-Winning Score To Give The Purple Knights Their Four Straight Victory
Washington, D.C-Senior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) headed home the game-winning goal off a 30-yard throw-in from junior Clayton Ulmer (New Haven, Conn.) 2:42 into the second overtime period to give the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team a hard-fought 2-1 road East Coast Conference win over the host University of the District of Columbia Firebirds on Saturday afternoon in our nation's capital. After opening the season at 0-4, UB has now posted four consecutive wins to even its overall record at 4-4-0, but more importantly, Saturday's victory gives the Purple Knights a 2-0-0 conference mark. UDC is now 3-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECC.
Bridgeport opened the scoring in Saturday's match when junior Christoffer Olesen (Kristiansand, Norway) hit the back of the net for the first time in 2012 off a cross from freshman Luis Fajardo (Danbury, Conn.) at the 26:38 mark of the first half.
The Firebirds would tie things at 1-1 with just less than four minutes to play in the first half, and that is how the score would stay until Middleton's golden goal in the second overtime period.
UB freshman goalie Augustin Prados (Madrid, Spain) was simply outstanding on Saturday making a season-high 10 saves.
The Bridgeport men's soccer team returns to Knights Field this Wednesday afternoon when they host the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in an important conference contest. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
