Matt Garcia's Golden Goal Lifts UB Men's Soccer To 1-0 Win Over Number 19 Franklin Pierce
Purple Knights Run Winning Streak To Three With Thrilling Overtime Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) put home the game-winning golden goal off a flicked pass from senior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) on a play that began from a long throw-in from junior Clayton Ulmer (New Haven, Conn.) just 4:53 into the first overtime to give the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights a thrilling 1-0 home, non-conference win of the Franklin Pierce University Ravens on Wednesday afternoon. Franklin Pierce entered the contest as the number 19 ranked team in the nation in NCAA Division II men's soccer by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America). The win, UB's third in a row, lifts the Purple Knights overall record to 3-4-0. The Ravens are now 3-2-0 so far in 2012.
Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Augustin Prados (Madrid, Spain) made three saves to record his second straight clean sheet.
Franklin Pierce dominated the afternoon in the shots on goal department, 13-4, but the Ravens could not find the back of the net.
Bridgeport will look to extend its winning streak to four on Saturday afternoon (September 22) when the Purple Knights return to East Coast Conference action in our nation's capital against the University of the District of Columbia. Action at UDC begins at 3:00 p.m.
