Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team opened its 2012 East Coast Conference schedule on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 road win over the NYIT Bears on Long Island. The triumph is the Purple Knights' second consecutive victory, and UB is now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the ECC. NYIT falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Bridgeport got on the scoreboard at the 16:56 mark of play when sophomore Jonny Ortiz (Stamford, Conn.) headed home his second goal of 2012 off an assist from senior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) on a play that began from a throw in.
Junior Andreas Blanke (Gothenburg, Sweden) put the contest out of reach when he scored on a penalty kick with just over two minutes to play in regulation.
Freshman Augustin Prados (Madrid, Spain) faced nine shots and made one big save early in first half to keep the match scoreless as he recorded his first clean sheet in a Purple Knights' uniform.
The Bridgeport men's soccer team returns to Knights Field on Wednesday afternoon when they host nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University. Action gets underway in the Park City at 3:00 p.m. on September 19.
