Lee Middleton's Header Helps Lift Men's Soccer To Key 1-0 Win At St. Thomas Aquinas
UB Clinches Spot In ECC Championship Tournament With The Victory
Pomona, N.Y.-Junior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) headed home his fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute at the back post off a corner kick from senior Patric Brundin (Gothenburg, Sweden) for the only goal of the match to give the visiting University of Bridgeport men's soccer team a key 1-0 East Coast Conference win over the host St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The victory, UB's fourth in a row, lifts the Purple Knights' overall record to 9-5-0 and more importantly, Bridgeport is now 4-2-0 in conference play. The Spartans are now 9-2-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the ECC. Saturday's win clinches a spot in the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament for the Purple Knights who could finish anywhere from second to fourth in the standings. They currently are in third place one point behind second place NYIT. Bridgeport holds the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Bears by virtue of a 3-0 win earlier this season.
Junior goalkeeper Danny Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) picked up his second consecutive 1-0 shutout, and his fifth solo clean sheet of the season, as he made five saves. As a team, Bridgeport now has six shutouts so far in 2011.
The Purple Knights are next in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Southern New Hampshire University in the team's 2011 home finale. Play begins at Knights Feld at 4:00 p.m.
