Purple Knights Grab Second Seed In ECC Tournament
Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Patric Brundin (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 31:05 mark of the first half as the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team posted a 3-1 East Coast Conference home win over the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on a chilly Saturday night. With the win, UB takes second place in the regular season ECC standings, and the Purple Knights and the Spartans, who finished third in the conference standings, will face-off again in the ECC Championship Tournament Semifinals in Bridgeport on Friday afternoon, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. The victory raises Bridgeport's overall record to 10-5-2, and the Purple Knights finish 5-1-1 in ECC play. UB is now unbeaten in its last seven matches with five wins and two ties. STAC is now 12-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 in conference action.
Bridgeport took a quick 1-0 lead in the match when sophomore Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) scored off an assist from freshman Markus Naglestad (Kristiansand, Norway) just 6:19 into the game.
The Spartans quickly tied things up less then a minute later when Daniel Devren converted a penalty kick.
After Brundin's score, senior Tim Stipo (LaVerne, Calif.) netted his first goal of 2010 off a beautiful cross from freshman Clayton Ulmer (Hamden, Conn.).
Senior goalkeeper Milos Suljagic (Belgrade, Serbia) was outstanding in net for the Purple Knights making seven saves to notch his eight win of the season.
