Lee Middleton's Golden Goal Gives UB Men 1-0 Overtime Win Over Mercy
Purple Knights Now 2-0-0 in Conference Play.
Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England) headed home the game-winning goal 4:22 into overtime to give the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team a home 1-0 victory over the Mercy College Mavericks in an East Coast Conference match on Saturday night. The victory raises UB overall record to 4-3-0, and the Purple Knights are 2-0-0 in conference play. Mercy is now 3-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECC.
Middleton's goal, his first of the season and first in a UB uniform, came off a ball that was headed by freshman Clayton Ulmer (Hamden, Conn.) off a play that began from a corner kick.
Bridgeport goalie Milos Suljagic (SR, Belgrade, Serbia) made three saves to record his first shut out of 2010.
Mercy goalkeeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz also played well making seven saves for the Mavericks.
Saturday's win gives the Purple Knights a two-match winning streak, and they will look to extend that to three on Tuesday night when they host Post University in a non-conference match. Game time at Knights Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
