Backhaus' Goal As Time Expires Lifts Men's Soccer To 2-1 Win Over Felician
Purple Knights Beat The Clock To Raise Record To 2-0-0 So Far In 2010
September 4, 2010
Bridgeport, Conn.-Freshman Taylor Backhaus (Ashford, Conn) made the first goal of his college career a memorable one as he poked home a cross from classmate Markus Naglestad (Kristiansand, Norway) as time expired to give the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights a thrilling 2-1 men's soccer victory over the Felician College Golden Falcons in the final game of the 2010 University of Bridgeport Men's Soccer Classic. With the win, Bridgeport is now 2-0-0 in the young season. Felician falls to 0-2-0.
The Golden Falcons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the match when
Carlos Canido fired home a long-range shot into
the top corner of the net just five minutes into the first
half.
The Purple Knights tied things at 1-1 late in the first half when junior Arnold Hitoaliaj (Tirana, Albania/Bridgeport Central HS) scored off an assist from junior Josh Pelegrini (Vineland, N.J.) at the 41:05 mark on a play that set up by the hustle of Markus Naglestad who saved a ball on the end line and played it to Pelegrini. Hitolaj now has scored three goals in two matches so far in 2010.
The win over Felician also gives head coach Brian Quinn the 100th career win of his 11-year tenure at the University of Bridgeport.
Bridgeport is next in action on Wednesday, September 8th when they play their first road match of the season at Southern New Hampshire University. Match time in Manchester. N.H. is set for 4:00 p.m.
