Women’s Volleyball Ends 2023 Regular Season As Champions
Bridgeport finished the 2023 regular season with a five-set win over Holy Family University Friday evening to take the CACC Regular Season Championship.
Philadelphia, Pa. – The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team won their final regular season match in dramatic fashion. UB dropped the first two set with the Tigers winning those by scores of 25-21 and 25-23 before the Purple Knights won three sets in a row by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 15-8. The win improves Bridgeport's record to 23-7 overall and 15-1 in the CACC and crowns them as CACC Regular Season Champions.
The Purple Knight attack took time to get up to speed in Philadelphia. UB hit at a .146 and .186 hitting percentage in sets one and two respectively. The team improved to .256 hitting percentage in set three before glowing red hot in sets four and five with a .500 and .556 hitting percentage respectively.
Freshman Grace Presswood (S. Dennis, Mass.) had another standout night for UB as she accumulated 18 kills, with a .381 hitting percentage as well as 16 digs and three assists. Classmate Hailey Jessen (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led all attackers with 20 kills and added five digs and three total blocks.
Setter Jaden Drollinger (Jr., Queens Creek, Az.) provided 48 assists to bring her year total to 1,230 which leads all of Division II women's volleyball. She added six figs and four kills. Drollinger also produced two services aces Friday which brings her season total to 68, tied second most in all of Division II.
Paola Hernandez (Jr., Bayamon, P.R.) supplied a game-high 21 digs, four assists and two aces in the backline for Bridgeport.
Datari Mathis (Grad., Wethersfield, Conn.) swung well, attacking with a .233 hitting percentage as she tallies 10 kills with four digs and three assisted blocks.
Lucia Tomiello (So., Caltrano, Italy) notched a .318 hitting percentage with nine kills while adding two aces, two total blocks, one dig and one assist.
Junior Madison Jongsma (Sanford, Fla.) was a force at the net defensively with a game-high six total blocks.
Up next, UB, as the North Division's top seed, will face off against the South Division's number four seed in the CACC Quarterfinals. That be either be Holy Family University or Georgian Court University. The match will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 6:00 p.m. with Bridgeport as the host.
