Purple Knights Pick Up A Tight Four-Set Home Volleyball Triumph Over Wilmington (Del.) University
UB Has Now Won Six Of Its Last Seven Matches And Two In A Row
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team upped its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference record to 10-5, and its overall mark to 11-16 with a tight, four-set win over the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Saturday in Hubbell Gym. The Purple Knights won the match, 26-24, 23-25, 27-25, 25-23. With the loss, the Wildcats are now 12-14 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Bridgeport has now won two straight matches and six of its last seven outings.
Saturday's match was so close it featured a total of 35 ties and 12 lead changes through the four sets.
Sophomore Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) led the UB offense with 19 kills, and she finished with an impressive double-double adding a season-high 19 digs to lead the team.
Freshman Marissa Mullins (Circleville, Ohio) continued her stellar play in her debut campaign for the Purple Knights with her own double-double of 16 kills and a season-high 10 blocks (five solos). Mullins also hit .333 on the day.
Classmate Lucia Tomiello (Caltrans, Italy) rounded out the trio of UB players in double-digit kills on Saturday with 13, and she added a team-high three service aces.
UB setter Jaden Drollinger (So., Queens Creek, Ariz.) notched her own double-double on Saturday, as she tied her season-best with 53 assists and added 16 digs. Jaden was also tough at the net contributing five blocks for the winners.
Freshman libero Isabella Carmona-Bailey (McKinney, Tex.) with 14 digs, and junior Haley Andrews (Southington, Conn.) with 11 digs helped anchor the UB defense on Saturday from the backline, as four Purple Knights finished with double-digits in digs on the day.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team wraps up its three-match homestand on Tuesday night when the Purple Knights host local rival Post University in a CACC contest. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
