Wilmington, Del.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team split a tri-match hosted by Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday afternoon in Delaware, as the Purple Knights defeated the host Lightning in four-sets in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest to open the day, and then UB fell in three tight sets to the Golden Rams of West Chester University in a non-conference tilt. With the split on the day, Bridgeport is now 9-16 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
Against Goldey-Beacom, the Purple Knights dropped the first set, 24-26, but came back to win the next three frames, 25-12, 25-20, 25-7, to up the team's winning streak to four.
Freshman Marissa Mullins (Circleville, Ohio) had a fine match to open the day leading the UB offense with 17 kills and a .520 hitting percentage. She also had nine blocks and four service aces in the win.
Classmate Lucia Tomiello (Caltrano, Italy) had 13 against the Lightning, and sophomore Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) also reached double-digit kills with 11, and she also added eight digs.
Sophomore setter Jaden Drollinger (Queens Creek, Az.) directed the UB offense to the tune of 39 assists in the victory, and freshman Isabella Carmona-Bailey (McKinney, Tex.) led the Bridgeport backline with 10 digs.
The West Chester match was close all the way through, but UB fell to the Golden Rams by a total of just of seven points in the three sets, 22-25, 23-25, 24-26.
Marissa Mullins and Lucia Tomiello led the Purple Knights' offense versus West Chester, as they each notched 11 kills. Paola Hernandez added eight kills and led the team with nine digs against the Golden Rams.
Jaden Drollinger had 35 assists from her setter spot to wrap up the day.
Up next, the UB volleyball team returns to Hubbell Gym to host the Golden Falcons of Felician University on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in a CACC matchup that opens a three-match homestand.
