Purple Knights Storm Back To Post A Five-Set CACC Volleyball Victory At Dominican University New York
UB Tops The Chargers, 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12
Orangeburg, N.Y.-Trailing two sets to none, the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team stormed back to pick up the squad's third win in a row, as the Purple Knights defeated the host Dominican University New York Chargers, 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Thursday night. UB is now 8-15 overall and 7-5 in the CACC. DU is also 7-5 in conference play, and the Chargers are now 9-11 overall.
Thursday night's victory is the Purple Knights first five-set triumph of the 2022 season, as UB was 0-3 in five setters entering Thursday. Bridgeport trailed, 5-8, in the deciding set before taking 10 of the final 14 points to finish off the comeback.
Thursday's match was truly a see-saw affair as there were a total 0f 29 ties and 18 lead changes over the course of the five sets.
Freshman Lucia Tomiello (Caltrano, Italy) led the Bridgeport offense with 19 kills on the night. She also added eight digs and three service aces in the five sets.
Classmate Marissa Mullins (Circleville, Ohio) was outstanding at the net for the winner at Dominican, as she slammed 18 kills with a .429 hitting percentage and contributed a total of seven blocks.
Sophomore Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) gave the Purple Knights a trio of players who finished with double-digit kills, as she had 10 on the night.
Setter Jaden Drollinger (So., Queens Creek, Az.) directed the UB offense with 41 assists against the Chargers, plus she chipped in eight digs.
Freshman Isabella Carmona-Bailey (McKinney, Tex.) finished the evening with a team-leading 18 digs from the Bridgeport backline.
Up next, the UB volleyball team will travel to Goldey-Beacom College for a tri-match on Saturday afternoon, as they will face the host Lightning at 12 noon in a CACC contest; followed by a non-conference tilt against West Chester at 2:30 p.m.
