Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team played its second tri-match in two days on Friday afternoon, and the Purple Knights picked up their first win of 2022 defeating the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, 3-0 (27-25. 25-21, 25-11), after opening play on the afternoon with a tough, five-set lost to local rival the University of New Haven, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-22, 11-15. UB is now 1-3 on the young season.
In the day's opener against UNH, sophomore hitter Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) tied her single-match, career-best in kills set just yesterday versus Adelphi with 21 and finished with a double-double adding 16 digs.
Freshman Lucia Tomiello (Caltrano, Italy) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, and sophomore setter Jaden Drollinger (Queens Creek, Az.) posted a single-match, career-best 10 kills and added 33 assists for a double-double.
Freshman Isabella Carmona-Bailey (McKinney, Tex.), for the third straight outing, led the UB defense with 19 digs.
Against QC, Bridgeport won six of the last seven points to take the opening set, 27-25, and never looked back on its way to the straight-set victory.
Paola Hernandez led the Purple Knights' offense with 13 kills, and she was joined in double-digits by freshman Marissa Mullins (Circleville, Ohio), who slammed 10 kills.
Lucia Tomiello had seven kills and 11 digs for the winners in the nightcap on Friday, and setter Jaden Drollinger directed the Purple Knights' offense to the tune of 30 assists in the victory over Queens.
As she did in all four matches to open the year, Isabella Carmona-Bailey led the UB defense with 16 digs.
After an extremely busy 48 hours to start the year, the UB volleyball team will now be idle until Wednesday, September 7, when the Purple Knights will open their 2022 home and CACC slate with a match versus Bloomfield College. First serve in Hubbell Gym is set for 7:00 p.m.
