Purple Knights Cruise To Straight Sets ECC Volleyball Win Over Mercy College
UB Now 8-1 In Conference Play And 11-9 Overall
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball raised its East Coast Conference record to 8-1 and its overall season mark to 11-9 on Thursday night at home, as the Purple Knights cruised to a straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-15, victory over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks (3-12, 2-6 ECC) in a contest that took only one hour and eight minutes to complete. UB has now won eight of its last 11 outings.
Senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the Bridgeport offense with 11 kills on the night.
Junior Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) had eight kills and hit .500 for the winners, and she also added a game-high three service aces.
Classmate Sheri Middleton (Humboldt, Kansas) hit .677 on the evening with six kills, and on defense, Middleton had four blocks.
Sophomore setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) directed the Purple Knights' offense with 27 assists, and Ellie had a solid all-around match with five digs, three block, two kills and one service ace.
Bridgeport senior libero Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France) finished the night a match-leading 15 digs.
For the match, Bridgeport hit .347 as team, and Mercy hit a -.045 percentage on the night.
After taking the weekend off, the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team will return to the court on Thursday, October 27 in East Coast Conference play at Queens (N.Y.) College. First serve in Flushing is set for 7:00 p.m.
