UB Volleyball Wins See-Saw, Five-Set ECC Match Over NYIT
Purple Knights And Bears Now Tied For The Top Spot In The Conference Standings At 6-1
Bridgeport, Conn.-A rematch of last season's East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament Final won by the University of Bridgeport and the NCAA Division II East Regional Final won by NYIT lived up to its billing on Thursday night in the park City, as the host Purple Knights defeated the visiting Bears, 3-2. UB claimed the see-saw affair by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10. With the win, Bridgeport is now 9-8 overall, and NYIT now stands at 18-3. The Purple Knights and Bears are currently tied atop the conference standings at 6-1 in ECC play, as they are one half game ahead of Daemen College who has a 5-1 conference mark.
Senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the UB offense with 18 kills, and Cruz finished with a double-double contributing 15 digs.
Freshman Claire Anderson (Oak Harbor, Wash.) was next in line on the Bridgeport kills chart with 12, and she fell just shy of a double-double with nine digs.
UB junior Sheri Middleton (Humboldt, Kan.) rounded out the Purple Knights in double-digit kills with 11, as she hit .476 on the night (11 k-1 e-21 ta). Middleton also played strong defense at the net chipping in six total blocks (three solos).
Classmate Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) had nine kills for Bridgeport to help keep the winners' offense nicely balanced.
Sophomore setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished with her own double-double with 48 assists and 17 digs.
Senior Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France) led the Bridgeport back row defense with a match-high 32 digs.
Sophomore Lexi Enck (Lititz, Pa.) and senior Salina DeCicco (Kingston, N.Y.) played big parts in Thursday's win, as they each played solid defense, as Enck recorded 14 digs and DeCicco added 10 to give Bridgeport a total of five players with double figures in digs in the five sets.
The UB volleyball team is right back in action on Friday night, as the team heads north to Waltham, Massachusetts for a non-conference match at Bentley University. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
