Purple Knights Overcome Slow Start To Best Molloy, 3-1, In 2015 ECC Volleyball Opener
UB Will Open Home Schedule On Thursday Versus NYIT In Hubbell Gym
Rockville Centre, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team 2015 East Coast Conference play on Tuesday night at Molloy College, and the Purple Knights picked up a four-set win over the host Lions. Bridgeport started off slowly losing the opening stanza, 19-26, but UB rebounded to win the next three sets, 25-20, 25-13, 25-14. Bridgeport is now 4-6 overall and -0 in the ECC. Molloy slips to 2-11 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
After splitting the first two sets, the Purple Knights came out smoking in the hitting department after the 10-minute break in between frames, as UB hit .476, notching 10 kills with no errors on 21 total attacks in set three, and .429 in the fourth set with 15 kills on 28 attacks with three errors.
Junior Katarina Krstonosic (Kikinda, Serbia) had a superb night for the winners recording a double-double with a match-leading 19 kills and 10 digs, plus she added three service aces. On the evening, Katarina hit an impressive .436 percentage with those 19 kills on 39 attacks with only two errors.
Senior Jade Zhao (Huhhot, China) had a strong contest notching nine kills with six blocks, and classmate Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) had eight kills on the night.
Freshman setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) fell just short of a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs.
Senior Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) led UB on defense with 14 digs.
Bridgeport has now defeated Molloy in 21 consecutive matches.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will play its long awaited home opener on Thursday night when undefeated NYIT comes to Hubbell Gym for an important early season ECC tilt. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
