UB Volleyball Completes Perfect ECC Regular Season At 16-0 With Sweep At Queens (N.Y.) College
Purple Knights Now 22-2 Overall As They Will Host Next Weekend's Conference Championship Tournament
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball completed an unblemished run through its 2014 East Coast Conference schedule with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 25-17) road sweep of the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Thursday evening in New York City. The Purple Knights stormed through their 2014 ECC schedule with a 16-0 record and head into to next weekend's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament with a 22-2 overall mark. UB lost only six total sets in conference play during the 2014 regular season. Queens slips to 11-15 overall and finished its ECC slate at 6-10.
UB opened the match slowly trailing 20-17 in set one, plus the Purple Knights had to fend off four set points before prevailing 28-26. After struggling in the first set, Bridgeport would then cruise to complete the sweep with set wins by scores of 25-15 and 25-17.
Graduate student Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) had a double-double for the winners with 10 kills and 19 assists, plus she added six digs.
Sophomore Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) had a fine night on offense for UB with nine kills, and senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) chipped in eight kills and a team-leading 14 digs.
Senior Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had seven kills and four blocks for Bridgeport on Thursday night, and graduate student Giovana Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 16 assists and five digs.
Also for the Purple Knights on Thursday, junior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) had 10 gigs and four kills, and junior libero Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) contributed nine digs.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will serve as host for the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament for the third consecutive campaign. Top-seed Bridgeport will face the number four seeded team which has yet to be determined at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14 in Hubbell Gym. At 7:30 p.m. that same evening, the number two-seed Dowling College Golden Lions will face a yet to be determined number three seeded team. The following night, Saturday, November 15, Friday's winners will compete for the 2014 ECC Women's Volleyball Title at approximately 8:00 p.m. with an automatic berth in this NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament on the line.
