Volleyball Sweeps Dowling In ECC Action
Purple Knights Sit Atop ECC Standings With 7-1 Conference Record
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) blasted a match-high 11 kills, and sophomores Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) each chipped in 10 kills to help the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team to a straight sets, 25-10, 25-20, 25-17, East Coast Conference home win over the visiting Dowling College Golden Lions on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 14-4 overall and 7-1 in ECC play to top the league standings. Dowling is now 14-9 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
As a team, Bridgeport had a .352 attack percentage on Wednesday night led by Springer's outstanding .458, as she had her 11 kills on 24 attacks with no errors. Darsel also played fine defense at the net adding two block assists. Shin hit .444 for the match, and she added a match-high five block assists. The Purple Knights had nine blocks on the night.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) had a fine all-around match on Wednesday, as she had 27 assists, nine digs and six kills with a .667 attack percentage (6 k-0 e-9 ta).
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) had a strong night on the backline for UB recording a match-high 11 digs.
The Bridgeport volleyball team is back in action at home on Sunday afternoon (October 21) at 2:00 p.m. when the team is back in East Coast Conference action versus conference newcomer, Roberts Wesleyan College.
