Purple Knights Top Mercy, 3-1, In ECC Volleyball Action
UB Now 11-2 Overall And 4-0 in Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) had a double-double with 15 kills and a team-high 12 digs, and classmate Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) added 13 kills and nine digs to help lead the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19) East Coast Conference home win on Tuesday night over a scrappy Mercy College Mavericks team. The win raises UB overall record to 11-2, and the Purple Knights stay undefeated in conference play at 4-0. Mercy is now 2-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Bridgeport has now won five matches in a row and picked up nine wins in their last 10 outings.
Shen had an impressive attack percentage in the win on Tuesday night at .560, as she had those 15 kills on 25 total attacks with only one error. As a team, UB hit .356 on the evening.
Other strong performance on offense for the Purple Knights were turned in by senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) with eight kills, sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with seven kills and senior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil) with seven kills.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the Bridgeport offense with 32 assists.
Oliveira had four block assists and Springer added three block assists to lead the team's defense at the net.
Mercy's Brenna White recorded a game-high 21 kills on the night.
The UB women's volleyball team returns to action on Thursday night (October 4) at home when they host Molloy College in and ECC clash. Action gets underway in Hubbell Gym at 7:00 p.m.
