Three Purple Knights Named AVCA All-East Region And Head Coach Leo Uzcategui Selected AVCA East Region Coach of the Year
Tamara Leite, Larissa Oliveira and Biljana Savic Earn All-Region Honors; Savic Named AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year
Bridgeport, Conn.-Three members of the 2011 NCAA Division II East Regional Champion University of Bridgeport Purple Knights' women's volleyball team have earned spots on this season's American Volleyball Coaches' Association of America (AVCA) All-East Region Team, and UB head coach Leo Uzcategui has been selected as the AVCA's East Region Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
Earning 2011 AVCA All-East Region honors are senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil), who also was on the All-Region team in 2010, freshman Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia). Savic was also selected as the 2011 AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year. 2011 marks the second consecutive year that Leite has earned AVCA All-Region accolades.
Uzcategui, who led his team the school's first-ever NCAA Regional title this season, was also named AVCA East Region Coach of the Year in 2009.
The University of Bridgeport will open play in the NCAA National Quarterfinals in San Bernardino, California on Thursday, December 1 when they face the University of Tampa, champions of the South Region. The Purple Knights are 21-7 so far this season.
