Volleyball Defeats Dowling, 3-1, On Senior Day
Purple Knights Hand The Golden Lions Their First Conference Loss Of 2011
Bridgeport, Conn.-Freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) slammed 24 kills with an attack percentage of .353 and senior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) added 16 kills and 10 digs to help lead the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (32-20, 26-28, 25-17, 25-19) home East Coast Conference victory over the Dowling College Golden Lions on a snowy Saturday aftenoon. UB, winners of four matches in a row, is now 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the ECC. The loss is Dowling first in conference play (10-1), and the Golden Lions are now 22-4 overall.
Junior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil) had eight kills and added eight blocks (one solo and seven assists) for the winners, and classmate Taylor McBeth (Langley, BC, Canada) had a solid all-around match with four kills, eight assists, a team-leading 15 digs and eight block assists.
Bridgeport senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) dished out 49 assists and added 11 digs and three block assists.
Senior libero Carolina Lobato (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had 14 digs for UB, and freshman Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had seven kills and seven blocks (two solos) for the victorious Purple Knights.
Bethany Shepard of Dowling led all players in the match with 25 kills.
Bridgeport is right back in action tomorrow (Sunday, October 30th) as the team plays its 2011 regular season final versus the University of the District of Columbia. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
