Purple Knights Grab Top Spot In ECC Standings With Four-Set Win Over Previously Undefeated Dowling
UB Runs Winning Streak to 13 Straight Matches
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport volleyball team grabbed sole possession of first place in the East Coast Conference and upped its winning streak to 13 matches with a four-set, 26-24, 25-15, 14-25, 25-23, home win over the previously undefeated Dowling College Golden Lions. Bridgeport is now 16-1 overall and 6-0 in East Coast Conference play. Dowling, who came into the match ranked number in the country by the AVCA, is now 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the ECC.
Senior Terry Masava (Nairobi, Kenya) led all players in the match with 20 kills on the night. She was joined in double-figures by graduate students Agatha Baliddawa-Mukisa (Jinja, Uganda) with 18 kills and Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin (Belgrade, Serbia) with 11 kills. Baliddawa-Mukisa also chipped five blocks (two solos), and Kivacevic-Jurasin added three service aces for the winners,
Junior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) directed the UB offense with 47 assists.
Junior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) played a fine all-around match with five kills, six digs and six blocks assists. As a team the Purple Knights had 11 total blocks against the Golden Lions.
Sophomore Taylor McBeth (Langley, BC, Canada) led Bridgeport with 10 digs on Thursday night.
Dowling Maja Potpara played a superb match in defeat, as she had 17 kills, 23 assists and 10 digs.
The UB volleyball team is right back in action Friday night as the travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for a non-conference clash with American International College. The match begins at AIC at 7:00 p.m.
