Bridgeport Indoor Track And Field Teams Make Successful Debut At The Elm City Invitational
Purple Knights Turn In Several Strong Performances Over The Two Days Of Action
New Haven, Conn.-It was a strong debut for the University of Bridgeport men's and women's indoor track & field teams over the weekend, as the Purple Knights took part in the programs' first-ever meet, the Elm City Invitational hosted by Southern Connecticut State University.
The UB men compiled 27 points to finish fifth in an eight-team field that the University of New Haven topped with 171 points. The UB women took sixth place in a nine-team field with 17 points. Host Southern Connecticut State University took first on the women's side with 122 points.
Event winners for the Purple Knights over the weekend were Brandon Adams (Grad., Highland Mills, N.Y.) in the men's high jump on Friday with a height of 1.90 m (6-2.75 ft), and junior Alexandra Toth (Sandy Hook, Conn.) won the women's mile in a time of 6:01.81.
On the men's side, strong performances were also turned in by freshman Oswin Charlemangne (Windsor, Conn.) who took second in the 200m Dash in a time of 23.30, and classmate Cristian Ellis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was sixth in that same event in a time of 23.59. Charlemangne also set a personal best time of 6.71 over the weekend in the 55m Dash.
The men's 4x400m Relay Team of Tydus Vongsiri , Charlemangne, Ellis and Luke Downes took second place in a time of 3:50.45.
Junior Faith Hershberger (Ephrata, Pa.) had an excellent weekend in the jumps for the UB women taking third place in the triple jump at 10.40m (34-01.5 ft) and sixth in the long jump at 4.85m (15-11 ft). Faith's mark in the triple jump is and indoor person best and a collegiate best for the transfer from Indiana University (Pa.), both indoor and outdoor, and her triple jump mark is also a collegiate best.
After taking a break for exams and the holidays, the UB indoor track & field teams will return to action in the New Year on Saturday, January 14, when the Purple Knights will return to SCSU to compete with the Owls and the University of New Haven in the I-95 Challenge in the Moore Field House
