UB Women Take Third And Men Fourth At 2016 Metro Conference Swimming Championships
NCAA Division II National Championship Meet Up Next From March 9-12
Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up the 2016 Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet in fine style on Sunday taking a total of five first place finishes on Sunday, as the UB women took third place over the three-day event, and the UB men finished in fourth place.
The Bridgeport women totaled 1041.5 points to finish behind first place LIU Post (1116 points) and third place The College of New Jersey (1090.5 points).
On the men's side, the Purple Knights compiled 835 points to take fourth place behind first place Rowan University (1426 points), second place The College of New Jersey (1325 points) and third place Southern Connecticut State University (894 points).
The UB women finished first in three events on the final day of the 2016 Metropolitan Conference Championship, as sophomore Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) won her second event of the meet taking the top spot in the 1650 yard Freestyle (17:02.85) and classmate Yekaterina Gakhokidze (Almaty, Kazakhstan), also won her second title of the meet winning the 100 yard Freestyle (50.57.) The Purple Knight women closed out the competition in fine style by winning the 400 yard Freestyle Relay (3:24.76).
For the UB men, freshman Klavio Meca (Triana, Albania) made it a sweep of the 1650's topping the podium in a time 15:52.02 for his second event win at this year's conference championship. Fellow freshman Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) won the 200 yard Backstroke (1:47.63).
After winning two individual events on Friday and Saturday, senior Ivan Capan (Zagreb, Croatia) finished second in the 200 yard Breaststroke by just .71 at 2:01.92.
At the end of the event, Capan received the Male Swimmer of the Meet Award, and Meca was chosen as the Male Rookie of the Meet.
Up next, several members of the University of Bridgeport swim teams will compete at the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet in Indianapolis, Indiana form March 9 through 12. A complete list of NCAA qualifiers will be released in the coming week.
