UB Swimmers Shine On Opening Night Of 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet
Purple Knights Earn All-American Honors In Five Events
Geneva, Ohio-It was a strong opening night at the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's & Women's National Championship Swimming & Diving Meet for the University of Bridgeport men's and women's teams, as the Purple Knights collected All-American honors in five events, and the UB women sit in fifth place as team with 60 points, and the Bridgeport men are in sixth place as team with 48.5 points. This year's NCAA Division II National Championship is being held in Geneva, Ohio just outside of Cleveland.
In individual events, Adeline Martin (Jr. Antibes, France) took fifth place in the women's 200-yard Individual Medley in an All-American time of 2:02.76. Sophomore Tatiana Shepel (Moscow, Russia) took all-American honors with a fourth place finish in the women's 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 23.09.Shepel set UB record with a time of 23.04 in the morning prelims.
On the men's side, senior Oscar Periero (Arzua, Spain) got his final Nationals started off with a bang as he tied for second in the men's 50-yard Freestyle with an All-American swim of 19.88. Oscar set a school record in that event in the morning prelims with a time of 19.73.
Both Bridgeport 200-yard Medley Relay teams earned All-American accolades as the women tied for the third place and the men took third place by themselves. The women's team of Jaimy Lee Taskin, Martin, Armony Dumur and Shepel turned in a time of 1:42.22. The men's team of Periero, Ivan Capan, Didac Matsuyama and Vladislav Paskas swam an impressive time of 1:27.56.
After Day One 2014 NCAA Division II Men's & Women's National Championship Swimming & Diving Meet, Wayne State tops the women's team standings with 120 points, and Drury leads the men's team race with 144.5 points.
