Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team triumphed over Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon. This win came on both UB's homecoming weekend and the UB women's soccer program's senior day. The win improves Bridgeport's season record to 7-6-3 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play.
UB started the day by recognizing five seniors and their contributions to the program during their time there. Those members of UB women's soccer were Daniela Frey (Barcelona, Spain), Lara Noe (Tübingen, Germany), Zahra Ouannass (Quincy, Mass.), Leigh-Ann Ramsay (Bronx, N.Y.) and captain Vivien Ruettgers (Munich, Germany).
The Purple Knights got to action quickly, piling the pressure on the lions. Erika Mazza (Grad., Campania, Italy) etched her name on the score sheet after heading home a whipped in cross by Solune Moll (So., Bern, Switerzland) in the 10th minute of the game. Mazza found herself right on the penalty spot after running across the face of the Georgian Court backline to get to the ariel ball first.
UB would go into the halftime break with the 1-0 lead.
The Lions would draw level in the 61st minute as Seanna Boan was able to thread the needle on a fast break and finds Abby Kennelly one on one with the keeper. Kennelly made no mistake and tucked the ball into the side netting to level things at 1-1.
Bridgeport would regain the lead in the 70th minute after Kate Thill (Jr., Goetzingen, Luxembourg) was slipped through by Solune Moll. Thill had the composure to take a touch around the onrushing Georgian Court keeper, create the opening and split the two outfield players trying to defend the Lions' open goal, giving UB a 2-1 lead that they would see through to the final buzzer.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will wrap up the regular season at home on Tuesday, October 31st as they host Dominican University for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
