Women’s Soccer Cutdown By Caldwell 2-1 Away From Home
UB women’s soccer found themselves on the wrong side on a penalty kick decision and lose to Caldwell University 2-1.
Caldwell, N.J. – The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team lost their CACC matchup with Caldwell University Wednesday afternoon. A scoreless first half was followed by three second half goals, but UB was on the wrong side of the 2-1 scoreline at the final buzzer. The loss drops UB's season record to 6-5-3 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play.
Bridgeport attacked with confidence, out shooting Caldwell 18 to eight and hitting the target 11 times to the Cougars 3. This advantage did not translate to goals however as the first half would end in a scoreless draw.
It wasn't until the second half, when in the 56th minute Caldwell would break the deadlock. The Cougar's Melissa Martinez found herself one versus one down the right flank and was able to create enough space to get a shot off to the UB near post, making the score 1-0 for the hosts.
UB would draw level with Caldwell in the 65th minute after Junior Angelina LoFranco (Greenacres, Fla.) latched onto a loose ball just to the right side of the penalty area. She then instinctively played a cutback cross to Tatianna Lizarraga (Grad., Tucson, Ariz.) who tucked the ball away neatly into the left side netting.
The 1-1 scoreline would remain for 10 minutes until the Cougars played a ball over the Purple Knight backline and goalkeeper Antia Lopez (Fr., Galicia, Spain) was deemed to have made contact with the player before the ball, resulting in a Caldwell penalty kick. Caldwell's Sarah Costanza stepped up to the spot and was able to put the ball past the outstretched arms of Lopez to give the Cougars the 2-1 lead and eventual win.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 28th at 12:00 p.m. against Georgian Court University. This match will also serve as the 2023 Senior Day Game where five Purple Knights will be recognized.
