UB Women's Soccer Holds On For Wild 4-3 CACC Road Win Over Dominican University New York
Purple Knights Now 3--0-0 In Conference Play
Orangeburg, N.Y.-The visiting University of Bridgeport women's soccer team raced out to a 4-1 lead over the host Dominican University New York Chargers early in the second half and then held on for a wild 4-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Purple Knights remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-0 and raise their overall season mark to 4-3-1. Dominican is now 4-3-1 overall and an even 2-2-0 in the CACC.
Sophomore Olivia Pousette (Halmstad, Sweden), who finished with a three-point day, got UB on the board quickly on Wednesday afternoon scoring her first goal of 2022 just 13:31 into play.
Dominican leveled the match at 1-1 just over 1:10 later, but the Purple Knights would score the next
Bridgeport broke the 1-1 tie when sophomore Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxembourg) netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from junior Morgan Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) just over a minute after the Chargers' tally.
The Purple Knights extended their lead to 3-1 heading into halftime when freshman Solune Moll (Bern, Switzerland) put home her first collegiate goal off an assist from Pousette in the 28th minute.
The UB offense picked right up to start the second half when sophomore Angelina LoFranco (Greenacres, Fla.) put home her fourth goal of the season, and what proved to be Wednesday's game-winner, less than five minutes into the final stanza of play.
From that point on, Dominican held UB scoreless the rest of the contest, and made things interesting with goals in the 65th and 67th minutes to cut the UB lead to just one goal.
In fact, the Chargers had a chance to the match at 4-4 with just under five minutes to play, but UB sophomore goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) managed to stop a penalty kick for one of her seven saves in the match to keep her team ahead.
On the day, Bridgeport outshot Dominican by a slight 19-17 margin, and the teams each had six corner kicks.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will look to stay unbeaten on five straight matches on Saturday afternoon in Delaware when the Purple Knights face Goldey-Beacom in a conference contest. Game time is set for 12 noon.
