New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team opened its 2022 season with an impressive 2-0 road win over the host Southern Connecticut State University Owls (0-1) on Friday night in New Haven.
The Purple Knights netted one goal in each half of action to make a winner out of new UB head women's soccer coach, Tania Armellino, in her debut on the UB sidelines.
Sophomore Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J.) got Bridgeport on the scoreboard in the 21st minute of play, when she put home a goal off a rebound from a Leigh-Ann Ramsay (Jr., Bronx, N.Y.) effort.
The score would hold at 1-0 into the second half, when Ramsay would tally her first goal of the season off a beautiful feed from sophomore Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxembourg) in the 55th minute to wrap up the scoring in the contest.
Bridgeport outshot SCSU, 20-14, on the night, and held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
UB sophomore goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) made six saves on the evening to earn his seventh career shutout in a Purple Knights' uniform.
Owls' keeper Abigail Allen was busy all night and played well making a total of 13 stops to open the year.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will be back in action at Southern Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., when the Purple Knights will face the Southern New Hampshire University in a neutral site tilt on Jess Dow Field.
