Rockville Centre, N.Y.-A penalty kick goal by Molloy's Dana Poetzsch, her second tally of the game with just 3:11 remaining in regulation lifted the second seeded and host Molloy College Lions to a 2-1 win over the visiting and seventh seeded University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Division Women's Soccer Championship Tournament in Rockville Centre, New York on Thursday evening. UB closes out its 2021 season with an 11-7-1 record. Molloy moves on to face Mercy College in Saturday's Second Round of the NCAA's with an 18-2-0 mark.
Bridgeport grabbed a 1-0 lead in the contest after a scoreless first half when junior Leigh-Ann Ramsay (Bronx. N.Y.) headed home her fifth goal of the season off a corner form sophomore Samantha St. Pierre (Granby, Conn.) in the 54th minute of action.
UB had a chance to extend its lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute, but Molloy goalkeeper Jackie Carty, who made three saves on the night, stopped a penalty kick attempt by the Purple Knights' Andrea Basilicato (Grad., Guilford, Conn.).
After that save, the host Lions' would tie the match at 1-1 just over two minutes later when Poetzsch scored her first goal of the night following a failed clearance.
Molloy outshot Bridgeport, 11-10, on the night and had and 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Bridgeport goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Fr., Umea, Sweden) made three stops in the Purple Knights' net.
