Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The host Mercy College Mavericks netted the only goal of the afternoon just 5:36 into the match when Claudia McKail capitalized on a University of Bridgeport defensive miscue and put home a shot from about 30 yards out, as the host team held on for a 1-0 East Coast Conference women's soccer win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Wednesday. Mercy is now 4-0-0 in conference play and 5-1-2 overall. The Purple Knights now stands at 3-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECC.
Mercy outshot UB, 10-6, on the day, as the Mavericks put six shots on goal to the Purple Knights' three. Mercy also finished with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden,) made three saves on the afternoon, and the UB defense managed to clear two Mercy shots off the goal line. Mercy keeper Melissa Torres made three saves for the winners to notch her school record clean sheet number 25.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will look to snap a four-match losing streak and pick up the team's first conference win of 2021 on Saturday afternoon at home when the D'Youville College Saints come to Knights Field. Game time is set for 12 noon.
