Bridgeport, Conn.-The visiting Molloy College Lions, ranked number 21 in the nation in NCAA Division II women's soccer, broke a 0-0 halftime tie with a goal just 1:27 into the second half and sealed the victory with another score with just under seven minutes to play, as the visitors posted a 2-0 East Coast Conference win over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Saturday evening at Knights Field. UB is now 3-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the ECC. Molloy ups its season mark to 6-1-0, and the Lions are 2-0-0 in conference play.
Molloy's Lexi Verni scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Annie Coogan early in the second stanza, and Sarah Tappeto added the insurance tally off a free kick late in the contest.
Bridgeport outshot Molloy, 17-12 on the night, and took nine corners to the Lions' four.
Freshman Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxemburg) led the Purple Knights with five shots, and graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Evelyn Hammer (Littleton, Colo.), each had three shots on the night.
UB freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) made three saves on Saturday, and Molloy's Jackie Carty had nine stops to pick up the clean sheet.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team hits the road for an East Coast Conference match at Mercy College on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 12 noon.
