Women's Soccer Locks Up Top Seed In 2016 ECC Championship Tournament With 9-0 Senior Night Win Over Queens (N.Y.) College
Win Is Also The Team's 10th Victory In A Row
Bridgeport, Conn.- The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team locked up the top seed in the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament and picked up its tenth win a row with a 9-0 Senior Night home win over the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Wednesday evening at Knights Field. UB is now 13-3-0 overall and remains unbeaten in ECC play at 7-0-0. QC slips to 4-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference action. Bridgeport has now scored a total of 39 goals in its last five matches, and Wednesday's nine goals gives the Purple Knights a season total of 64 which is a new single-season school record surpassing the old mark of 63 set by the 2007 team,
Six different Purple Knights scored goals on Wednesday night for the Purple Knights, as UB netted five goals in the first 45 minutes of action and added four more in the second half. On the night, Bridgeport outshot the visiting Knights, 25-3, and had a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
UB graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) scored her team-best 19th goal of the season just 44 seconds in the match off an assist from senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) who would score two goals of her own on the night and add one more assist for the winners. Agirre has now found the back of the net in nine straight matches.
Seniors Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) and Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) would each add two goals on the night, and Hanne would add an assist to give her five points on the evening.
Senior Julia Weidenmark (Varnamo, Sweden) and freshman Valentina Florez (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) rounded out the Bridgeport goal scorers on the night, and Weidemmark along with classmates Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) each had one assist for the victors.
Sophomore Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany), the first of three UB goalkeepers on the night, played the entire first half making one save to earn her third win of the season.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team closes out the 2016 regular season at Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
