Winning Streak Now At Six As Women's Soccer Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0
UB Now 9-3-0 Overall And 3-0-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team upped its winning streak to six matches with a convincing 9-0 East Coast Conference home win over the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Lady Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field. The victory brings the Purple Knight to 9-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ECC play; while the Spartans fall to 3-11-0 overall and 0-6-0 in conference action. Wednesday's nine goals are a season-high for UB, and the Purple Knights have now outscored their opponents by a 28-2 margin during the team's six-match winning streak.
Graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) netted a single game, season-high four goals in the match. Her tally first came 13:16 into play when sophomore Rebecka Ronnegard (Norrkoping, Sweden) received a long ball then sent it through the middle of the box to Agirre, who sliced it in the back of the net. Idoia leads Bridgeport with a total of 14 goals so far this season.
Four more Purple Knights scored goals on the day, as junior Nicole Greenwald (Levittown, N.Y.) had two goals and, seniors Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England), plus junior Carolina Rico (N. Bergen, N.J.) each netted one marker.
UB outshot STAC by a whopping 33-6 margin on the day.
Along with Ronnegard, Colligan and Gamby, four other Bridgeport players had assists in the win, senior Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) had two assists, and graduate student Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) and junior Rilee Miller (Salt Lake, Utah) each had one helper.
Three goalies took the field for Bridgeport on Wednesday, sophomore Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden), junior Sydney Nordan (Anniston, Ala.), and freshman Anneliese Jennings (Warminster, Pa.); with Wendelius, who started the match, picking up her seventh win of 2016. Both Wendelius and Nordan had one save for the match.
Up next, UB women's soccer team takes the field for Homecoming this Saturday, October 15th where they host ECC rival Molloy College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
