Old Westbury. N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team got an early goal from graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) and a second half marker from junior Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.), as the Purple Knights cruised to a 2-0 East Coast Conference road victory over the host NYIT Bears on Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
With the win, the Purple Knights, winners of five matches in a row, are now 8-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in ECC action. The host Bears slip to 3-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play. UB has also now recorded three consecutive shutouts, and during the team's five-match winning, Bridgeport has outscored its opponents by a 19-2 margin.
Agirre's goal, her team-best tenth of the season, came just 1:04 into play when she beat the NYIT goalkeeper one-on-one with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
Weingrad's tally, her first goal of 2016, came off an assist from senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway), as she buried a shot from outside the box into the left corner of the goal. Neby leads UB with six assists on the season.
On the afternoon, the Purple Knights outshot their host by a 19-3 margin.
Bridgeport sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany) made one save to earn her first clean sheet of 2016.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will open a five-match homestand with when they host the Lady Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday, October 12th. Kickoff at Knights Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
