Women's Soccer Falls In 2016 Home Opener In Overtime To Southern New Hampshire, 2-1
UB Now Head To Washington State To Face Western Washington And St. Martin's. Thursday Match At WWU Will Be Broadcast Nationally On ESPN3 And Watch ESPN
Bridgeport, Conn.-Southern New Hampshire's Alexa Poulin finished off a cross from Abigail Maker just 1:58 into overtime to lift the visiting Penmen to an exciting 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Monday night in UB's 2016 home opener at Knights Field. SNHU is now 5-2-0 overall, and Bridgeport sees its overall mark slip to 3-2-0.
After a scoreless first half, Bridgeport finally got on the scoreboard when graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) netted her third goal of 2016, when she took a beautiful through ball from senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) and found the back of the SNHU net with 5:23 to play in regulation.
SNHU would tie things at 1-1 just 34 seconds later when Abigail Maker, who assisted on the game-winning goal, scored when she placed a shot past UB goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (So., Lidingo, Sweden) who had ventured way out of her net to challenge the play.
On the night, Wendelius made six saves, and SNHU's Autumn Scanlon had 10 stops for the winners. On the night, Bridgeport outshout the Penmen, 26-12.
The Purple Knights were frustrated on offense on the night, as they put the ball in the back of net just after the horn went to end the first half, and a potential game-winning shot by Idoia Agirre with 1:09 to play in regulation that beat Scanlon was cleared off the goal line by the SNHU defense.
Monday's loss snaps a 27-match home winning streak by UB, as the last time the Purple Knights fell at home was on November 4, 2012. In their last 56 home matches, Bridgeport is now 52-2-2.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will travel to the State of Washington for matches on Thursday night at Western Washington University, in a battle of teams that reached the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Semifinals, and Saturday afternoon at Saint Martin's College. Thursday night's match at WWU which begins at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3 and Watch ESPN.
