New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team used a goal just 3:36 into play and a strong defense to defeat the American International College Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in the 2016 season opener for both teams played as part of the Southern Connecticut State University Women's Soccer Classic at Jess Dow Field. The victory by the Purple Knights gives head coach Magnus Nilerud career win number 230 on the Bridgeport sidelines.
Newcomer Idoia Agirre (Grad., Legazpi, Spain) made a successful debut in a UB uniform when she netted the only goal of the afternoon at the 3:36 mark of action, when she broke away from the AIC defense after an assist from senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) to beat 'Jackets goalkeeper Madison Brown with a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Bridgeport goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) picked right up where she left off in 2015 when she notched 12 solo shutouts, making five saves to record a clean sheet in the 2016 season opener.
The UB women's soccer team will look to open the 2016 campaign with back-to-back wins on Sunday afternoon when they return to New Haven to face the Southern Connecticut State University Owls, hosts of this year's season-opening classic. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
