Sophomore Ariana Weingrad's Goal With Just 56 Seconds To Play Lifts UB Women's Soccer To NCAA Third Round
Purple Knights Top LIU Post, 1-0, And Will Adelphi In Championships Next Round
Bridgeport, Conn.-A goal by University of Bridgeport sophomore Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) with just 56 seconds to play in the second half lifted the host Purple Knights to a 1-0 victory over the visiting LIU Post Pioneers and a spot in the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship next Friday at UB's Knights Field.
The East Region's top-seed, Bridgeport found itself in an even battle with the number five seed Pioneers all afternoon until Weingrad pick up a loose ball just outside the top of the box and beat LIU Post goalkeeper Felicia Orderud, who made five saves on the day, to the corner of the net.
With the win, the Purple Knights advance with a season record of 19-1-1. The 19 victories are a single-season school record for UB. LIU Post finished 2015 at 14-4-3.
On the day, Bridgeport outshot the visitors by a slim, 8-6, margin, and the host Purple Knights took one more corner kick, 4-3.
Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made three saves on the day to notch her eleventh solo shutout of the year.
Bridgeport will now host Adelphi University, a 1-0 winner over Philadelphia University, in the 2015 NCAA Davison II National Championship Third Round at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, November 20.
