Bridgeport, Conn.-Freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.) scored the only goal of the match late in the second overtime period to lift the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 East Coast Conference win over the visiting Dowling College Golden Lions on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Purple Knights, winners of five consecutive matches, are now 10-1-0 overall and a perfect 4-0-0 in East Conference play. Saturday's triumph also marks the fifteenth straight season the Purple Knights have accumulated at least 10 wins in a season. DC is now 4-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference action.
UB dominated the game offensively the entire day, outshooting the visitors, 22-8, but Dowling goalkeeper Mariah Valva, who finished with nine saves on the afternoon, made several phenomenal stops to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.
Bridgeport finally broke through and tallied the golden goal when Laszlo netted her team-leading seventh marker of 2015, connecting on a header off a beautiful cross from junior Lauren Mengel (Gilberstville, Pa.) with 2:45 remaining in the final overtime period.
UB freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lindingo, Sweden) made one save to record the fifth solo clean sheet of the season.
The UB women's soccer team will take Sunday off before returning to action on Monday evening at home when they host Georgian Court University in a non-conference match. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
