Pair Of Second Half Goals Lift UB Women's Soccer To 2-0 Home ECC Win Over Mercy
Flo Gamby And Nicole Greenwald Net Goals For The Purple Knights
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team scored two second half goals on Wednesday night, as the Purple Knights defeated East Coast Conference rival, the Mercy College Mavericks, 2-0, in Bridgeport. With the victory, the UB women are now 7-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ECC. Mercy is now 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play. Last season, Mercy topped UB three times, including wins in the Conference Tournament Final and the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.
After a scoreless first half, the Purple Knights got on the scoreboard quickly just 2:07 into the second half, when senior Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) tallied her second goal of the year off a pair of beautiful passes from freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway).
Bridgeport added an insurance goal with just over 13 minutes to play in the match when sophomore Nicole Greenwald (Levittown, N.Y.) found the back of the net off another assist from Laszlo.
UB freshmen goalkeepers Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany) and Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) shared the clean sheet with Wendelius picking up the win playing the second half of play. Ziegner made one save in the first 45 minutes of action. As a team, Bridgeport has notched a total of six shutouts so far in 2015.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will continue conference play with a big ECC matchup at home versus LIU Post University on Saturday evening. Kickoff at Knights Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
