Women's Soccer Opens Texas Swing With 2-0 Win At Texas A&M International
Purple Knights Now 5-0-0 On The Season
Laredo, Texas-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team opened its two-game swing through the State of Texas on Friday night with a convincing 2-0 win over the host Texas A&M International University Dustdevils on a hot evening in the Rio Grande Valley. The Purple Knights, who are ranked number five in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, are now 5-0-0 with the victory, and TAMIU slips to 1-4-0 on the season.
The Purple Knights got on the scoreboard quickly when junior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) netted her second goal of the year off an assist from freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.).
UB would take a 2-0 lead into halftime, and that score proved to be the final tally, when senior Gabby Reis (West Haven, Conn.) found the back of the net for the second time in 2015 off an assist from Neby, who finished the match with three points.
Bridgeport dominated the match outshooting the host Dustdevils, 31-5, and UB took 14 corners to zero for Texas A&M International.
UB freshmen goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden), who made one save plus picked up the win to raise her season record to 5-0-0, and Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany), who made two stops, shared the shutout. As a team, the Purple Knights have four clean sheets in five matches.
Dustdevils' keeper Chelsea Knaack was outstanding making a whopping 18 saves to keep her team in the match.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team heads to Austin, Texas for a Sunday contest at St. Edward's University. St. Ed's is ranked number six in the nation just behind the Purple Knights. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
