Bridgeport, Conn.-A free kick goal by freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.) with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation lifted the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to a 1-0 season-opening home win over the visiting American International College Yellowjackets on Friday evening in match two of the 2015 University of Bridgeport Women's Soccer Classic.
Laszlo, who rang a shot off the post early in the second half, blasted her game-winning goal just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of AIC goalkeeper Rachel Edgin, on a free kick from outside the 18-yard box. Edgin made six saves on the night, as she faced 17 UB shots. Bridgeport outshot the Yellowjackets, 17-6, in the match.
Purple Knights' freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made one save to record a shutout in her UB debut.
The UB women's soccer team is back in action on Sunday night when they wrap up the 2015 University of Bridgeport Women's Soccer Classic with a 6:00 p.m. home match against Southern Connecticut State University.
