Newark, Del.-Sophomore Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) each scored two goals as the University of Bridgeport women's team cruised to a 5-0 non-conference win over the host Wilmington University Wildcats in rainy Delaware on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, UB is now 9-3-1 overall, and Wilmington falls to 3-11-0 on the season.
Moura netted the first goal of day just 10:31 into play when she scored off a corner kick served by classmate Tabea Rauschenberger (Mühlacker, Germany).
Weingrad would give the Purple Knights a 3-0 lead at the half finding the back of net for her second and third tallies of the season at the 36:16 mark a just before the break at 44:17.
A brace for Moura would come just 1:13 into the second half when she scored her team-leading fifth goal of 2014 off an assist from freshman Sophie Sorkvist (Orebro, Sweden).
Sophomore Julia Weidenmark (Varnamo, Sweden) would score UB final goal of the match on a header at the 69:02 mark off assists from Rauschenberger and freshman Ellen Karlsson (Orebro, Sweden).
UB outshot the Wildcats, 28-3 on the afternoon, and the five goals are a single-match high for the Purple Knights so far this season.
Freshmen goalkeepers Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) and Ava Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) shared the clean sheet on Wednesday, as they each made one save. As a team, the Purple Knights now have eight shutouts this year.
The UB women's soccer team returns to East Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon when the squad travels to NYIT for its 2014 regular season road finale. Action is slated to get underway on Long Island at 12 noon.
