Sophomore Lauren Mengel's First Career Goal Gives UB Head Women's Soccer Coach Magnus Nilerud Career Win Number 200
Bridgeport Tops Queens (N.Y.), 1-0, To Move To 6-1-1 Overall And 3-1-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) made her first collegiate goal a big one as it was the only score of the match as the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team posted a 1-0 home East Coast Conference win over the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on a damp Wednesday evening at Knights Field. With the win, UB is now 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play. Queens slips to 2-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the ECC. Wednesday's victory by the Purple Knights also gives UB head coach Magnus Nilerud win number 200 of his 16-year career on his alma mater's sidelines. Nilerud has now posted an impressive 200-92-18 career record.
Mengel netted Wednesday's only goal when she stole the ball from two Queens' defender and ripped a shot to the top corner of the QC net from near the top of the box just 13:31 into play.
Bridgeport goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip. N.Y.) would make Mengel's goal stand up as she made three saves to record her fourth solo shutout of the season and raise her season record to 5-1-0.
The UB women's soccer team will now step out of conference play for a match at Stonehill next Tuesday, October 7. Action is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Purple Knights next home match will be against Nyack College on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m.
