Brookville, N.Y.-UB freshman Sophie Sorkvist (Orebro, Sweden) scored the only goal of the match 13 minutes into the second half to help lift the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Southern Connecticut State University Owls in the final contest of the season-opening LIU Post Women's Soccer Classic. With the victory, Bridgeport is now 2-0 on the young season. SCSU is an even 1-1 so far in 2014.
After a scoreless first half, Sorkvist headed home her first collegiate goal off a cross from senior Gillian Munro (Manchester, England).
The win would not come without several anxious moments for the Purple Knights, as the Owls would hit three posts during the match, and Bridgeport would play the final 11:33 of the match a down a player after freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) was shown a red card for a foul. Sophomore Stephanie Vahos (Shelton, Conn.) would enter the game in goal for UB and withstood the ensuing Southern Connecticut penalty kick, plus she kept the Owls off the scoreboard for the rest of the day to preserve the clean sheet for her team.
The Bridgeport women's soccer team will stay on the road for its next action on Wednesday, September 10, when the Purple Knights travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Southern New Hampshire University. Action is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
